Is this course right for you?

This course is for adults in Victoria who have been contacted by police and asked to attend an interview, or who think they may be arrested or questioned soon, and who want to understand their rights and prepare before they speak to a lawyer. It also suits family members and friends supporting someone in that position. It is general education to help you understand the process, ask the right questions and get the most out of legal advice. It is not a substitute for that advice.

This course is not a substitute for legal advice and is not suitable as your only preparation if you are under arrest or in custody right now (ask police to let you call a lawyer straight away), if you are under 18, if the matter is serious (for example violence, sexual offences, drugs beyond personal use, serious fraud, or anything that could lead to jail), if you are not an Australian citizen and a charge could affect your visa, if you are already on bail, parole or a court order, if you have a criminal record, if you have a cognitive disability or mental health condition that affects how you communicate, or if you need an interpreter. In any of these situations, speak to a lawyer before you go to any interview. Victoria Legal Aid, community legal centres, the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service and private lawyers, including our firm, can help.
